Whether you plan to spend a day - or several - with us, we know you've sought this island out as a quiet and uncrowded place where you can enjoy nature's delights in our campground, in and on the water, and elsewhere in our delightful little Island Community!
Deer Island is primarily a working fishing community. Everywhere you will see fishery-related objects and historical structures that are a part of our lives and heritage. You will be conscious of sea and sky, land, fog, mist, sun and cloud, and the great variety of plant and animal, bird and marine life that makes our coastal world so very special.
When exploring our beautiful Island, you will want time to savour it, camera and film to record it, and perhaps a tidal calendar as well! The latter informs of daily high and low tides; useful to know when planning a walk to places like the beach or to Bar Island, or to view our world-famous whirlpools (best seen 3 hours before high tide).
Some Island Highlights:
WHALE WATCHING TOURS:
Deer Island Point offers some of the best whale watching experiences anywhere. The Bay of Fundy, in addition to it's spectacular tides (highest in the world) is also world-famous for it's whales as many of these majestic creatures make the Bay their summer home. You may see the endangered North Atlantic Right whale including a number of new calves, the playful Humpback, the huge Finback, the Sei & Minke whales etc.. In addition, there are many pods of playful dolphins and porpoise as well as a variety of seals and the occasional walrus or basking shark. A whale watching excursion is a boon for birdwatchers as there are uncountable numbers of seabirds to catalogue. Deer Island offers two whale watching businesses to choose from.
UNIQUE SCUBA DIVING AREAS:
Deer Island Point offers some very unique diving grounds. There are divers that come from near and far to dive off Deer Island Point. However, diving off of Deer Island Point Park is not recommended for those with no diving certification or inexperienced diving in fast water or tidal water conditions as the tides and currents that run here are strong and ever changing.
PUBLIC WHARVES: The wharf is the workplace for fishermen and boatmen. Parking areas are found near the wharves in Lord's Cove, Richardson, Leonardville and Fairhaven. The Stuart Town wharf has NO parking and turning space is limited.
BEACHES: Deer Island Point: Home of Deer Island Point Park, this park offers a small sandy strip ideal for bathing, and on the south-east side, an interesting arch formation. The Parc is the place to view the World-Famous "Old Sow" Whirlpool - largest in the Western Hemisphere!
Cummings Cove: a popular bathing beach and a good spot to observe a Salmon Cage operation.
Stuart Town & Lambert's Cove: Both good rocky beaches. See Lobster Pounds and contrasting Cove/Bay views.
BIRDING:
Over 300 species of birds have been identified in the region. There is good birding all year around on the Island or from the ferries. Common species are Bald Eagle, Osprey, Great Blue Heron, Black-Crowned Night Heron, Kingfisher, Eider Duck, and Gulls. Other species often seen are Pileated Woodpecker, Blackburnian, Northern Parula and other Warblers. There are many other native songbirds and Passerines. In winter see Ducks, Loons and Eagles. Popular birding spots are The Big Meadow Pond and Marsh, woodland trails and, of course, Deer Island Point Park.
BOATING:
The ferries are of necessity for vehicular traffic but also provide passage for foot passengers, Hikers and Cyclists out to explore Campobello, Eastport Maine or Green's Point Light at L'Etete. A late evening round trip on the Free ferry at L'Etete makes for a perfect sunset cruise. Day-shoppers can explore St. Andrews and there are a number of Whale-watching, Scuba Diving and Sightseeing Tours available from Deer Island.
WALKING/HIKING:
Short trails are found at Deer Island Point Park, and Chocolate Cove. Popular walks include one from Leonardville to Hibernia and back. At the Island's northern end, a double-loop past the Nordic Plant to Lambert's Cove, Hersonville, then back to Lord's Cove.
ARCHITECTURE:
Many of the older homes have hand-carved shingles, turrets, and "Gingerbread". The Church of Christ in Leonardville, and the Lambert's Cove United Baptist Church retain many of their original features. The Leonardville Lighthouse can be reached by a path from roadside.
ACCOMMODATION:
In addition to Campground facilities found at the Point Park, there are a number of Guest Houses, Chalet's, B&B's and Cottages available on Deer Island.
We look forward to having you visit our Island and assisting you in any way possible to ensure your stay in our Island Community is a memorable one.
